Matthew is the newest ranger here at Rhino River Lodge, though it's as if he's been working he for years. He's fit right in and jumped in head first with some awesome sightings and great guest reviews already in his very first month. Here we ask Matthew a few questions to get to know him a bit better.
What led you to your position at Rhino River Lodge?
I always had a desire to work in the Zululand area, so when I heard of the position being available I got in contact with Dale and found myself here a few weeks later.
What aspect of your new position are you most excited about?
Experiencing new sightings with animals in a different area and viewing different animal behaviours than I have previously experienced.
What is your favourite part of being a game ranger?
Interactions with guests during different sightings. Seeing their reactions, answering their questions and educating them about the bush.
What advice would you give someone coming on safari for the very first time?
Have no expectations, ask as many questions as possible and don't come to only see the big five. The bush is a haven of interesting things.
Do you have a favourite animal to view on game drive? If so, why?
Elephant. The different interactions and situations that you get from elephants make it exciting. They also display many different interesting behaviours that helps to keep the conversation with guests going.
What do you love best about living in the bush?
Not knowing what to expect. Every day is different and offers me and my guests new and unexpected experiences.
